Reliance pips VSNL for Deutsche Telekom deal
Submitted by Karthik on 23 June, 2006 - 23:13.Reliance infocomm appears to have won the latest round in their ongoing bandwidth wars with VSNL.
Reliance Infocomm’s international network transport and communication service providing company, Flag Telecom, has bagged Deutsche Telekom’s bandwidth contract worth $80-100 million. The contract had reportedly attracted bids from Tata Group company Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), Cable & Wireless and Singtel.
The order, which sources said is the biggest till date, is to buy bandwidth under the sea between Europe and the US for Deutsche Telekom's retail broadband business all over Europe.

CitiGroup acquires 6.3% of VSNL
Submitted by Karthik on 23 June, 2006 - 23:04.Citigroup Global Markets, along with other Citigroup companies, said it has acquired 6.3 per cent stake in telecommunications company Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, in its filing with Securities and Exchange Commission, US, on June 19.
However, news agencies reports coming in late evening on Tuesday said that Citigroup was planning an amendment in its SEC filing to announce that its stake in VSNL was around 3 per cent only, and not 6.3 per cent.

VSNL to set up 24x7 WiFi access in 68 railway stations
Submitted by Karthik on 17 June, 2006 - 03:44.VSNL plans to set up 68 cyber-cafés all across key railway stations in India. The first of these cyber-cafés was recently opened in Bangalore railway station.
The cyber cafés will enable all Tata Indicom subscribers access the internet using their existing accounts. Each of these cyber cafés will be equipped with 10-20 high-end multimedia PCs with flat panel monitors and will remain open on a 24x7 basis.
Tata Indicom will also create select Wi-Fi areas, providing wireless internet access to passengers on their laptops or Wi-Fi-enabled PDAs.
